Cutouts. These “Cutouts”
are painted in oils on plywood and “installed” throughout
Bruce County, Ontario. With the expansion of the Bruce Nuclear Plant
along the shores of Lake Huron and a growing concern about clean water
quality in the area, these Hazmat figures counter the romantic view
of the Canadian Landscape. Installed along waterways and visible from
the roadside, these figures hint that not all is well among the forests
and waterways of cottage country.
Agricultural by-products, sewage and other pollutants wash into the
lakes and rivers causing increased bacteria counts and E-coli. These
can sit dormant for over 20-years in sand, which can be stirred up
by increased wave activity. Additionally, the Bruce Nuclear Plant
continues to be a major employer in the area.
