REVIEWS - Pulp Kitchen 898 Queen Street East P: (416) 461-4612 We had been to Pulp Kitchen late one night, when we were desperate for someone else to cook us dinner. We had read about it in the Toronto Vegetarian Association's newsletter and it sounded quite good. Located on Queen St. E., near Logan (a few minutes east of downtown Toronto), it's quite convenient if you're anywhere near the downtown area. Although they were closing in 10 minutes that first night, they graciously and enthusiastically served us with no rushing or attitude. The server was very friendly and told us that he highly recommended the weekend brunch at Pulp Kitchen, and as many vegans know - an animal free brunch is one of those meals that you can't just get anywhere..... 6 weeks passed before we could sample this brunch, and yet the same friendly server remembered us immediately and that we were vegans and were interested in the brunch (how's that for service!?). The restaurant is sparse, but with a convivial atmosphere. The day we had brunch, there was a nearby art show which was also being held in the restaurant (the artist was greeting customers as they came in) which added to the groovy feel of the place. So here's the brunch review... To start us up (we'd been out late the night before), we both had "Pink Drinks" made of strawberries, red grapefruit & banana. It was satisfying, but slightly tarter than I normally would like, but it did the trick in freshening me up. The brunch features an Eggless Omelette (a tofu and vegetable mixture that is baked in an oven) with roast portabello mushroon, caramelized onion, red pepper & fresh spinach. The texture of the omelette was perfect with the right amount of crunchiness, chewiness and moisture to make it interesting and filling. Offered along with it, was the home-made fiery chili sauce that I had tried on the previous visit (I should have been a bit more cautious though, as I used a little too much which fortunately didn't ruin the experience). Along with the omelette were herbed home fries that have a wonderful earthy taste and hint that they've been roasting for a couple of hours just waiting for me to arrive. Accompanying was a side salad that was elegant with a mild dressing which was fine as the salad was a supporting actor in this little play. Loved the food, loved the service. We've found a new local place! groovegan rating: ***** © 1999-2004 KL Projects |
