History & Theory Robbins, John. (1987). Diet for a New America. Toronto: Fitzhenry & Whiteside Ltd. (Heir to the Baskin-Robbins Ice-Cream empire writes the landmark book on veganism. Heavy on the moral/ethical side, as well as large sections on health and the environment.) Diamond, Harvey & Marilyn. (1987). Fit for Life 2: Living Health. New York: Warner Books Inc. (Harvey & Marilyn have supposedly split up, but a good book for suggestions on food-combining and the very cleansing "fruit only breakfast". ) Spencer, Colin. (1993). The Heretic's Feast: A History of Vegetarianism. London: Fourth Estate Ltd. (Want to find out what the early Christians thought of animals? Pythagoreas' diet? Who was executed for their heretical vegetarian views? This book treats you to the most obscure and fascinating facts on vegetarianism from primitive societies through to the 20th century. A great book.) Lappé, Frances Moore. (1971, 1991). Diet for a Small Planet. Toronto: Random House of Canada Ltd. (The book that led to so many others! Although her ideas on protein complementarity have changed since the original edition in 1971(it's easier than originally thought to get complete proteins from grains), the information on land usage (wastage) for the production of meat is well worth the reading as well as a review on protein.) © 1999-2004 KL Projects
